Estrogen Supplements

Estrogen supplements may help to reduce menopausal symptoms due to naturally occurring plant substances that aid in balancing hormone levels. Plant substances called phytoestrogens naturally occur in many foods such as soy, lentils, flax, clover, grape skins, and some herbs. Natural estrogen creams contain phytoestrogens and can generally be applied once per day or as instructed by a physician. Menopausal symptoms that many women experience are hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, irritability, insomnia, cold chills, headache, and fatigue. Other substances that may help with symptoms include bio identical progesterone with phytoestrogens and products that contain herbal remedies. Interactions can occur between herbs and some prescription drugs so it is best not to start herbal therapy without consulting a physician.

Hormone replacement therapy may help balance out hormonal fluctuations but it is not advisable to self-treat. There are so many products and supplements for women to choose from, it can be very confusing. Synthetic hormone replacement therapy can only be obtained through a physician. Synthetic alternatives have had studies linking long-term use with high risks for developing heart disease, stroke, blood clots, and breast cancer. Because of these studies many women are searching for natural alternatives to help with intolerable symptoms associated with menopause. Since long-term studies haven't been published on using natural hormone replacement therapy, consider short-term use only. Natural estrogen creams contain plant derivatives that closely resemble human hormones. There are herbs added to many of the products on the market including, black cohosh, red clover, and evening primrose oil.

Vitamins and mineral supplements may help with intolerable symptoms associated with hormone imbalances. Estrogen supplements may help to restore energy levels while decreasing other discomforts. Eating healthy and participating in a regular exercise program will help the body to combat hormonal imbalances. Sometimes just losing a few extra pounds can alleviate some discomfort. Include lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, and foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Eliminate high-fat, high-sugar, and high-sodium foods. Processed foods usually contain a host of ingredients that are bad to consume. One way to become educated about eating properly is by learning to read labels. Making healthy changes will not only help with hormonal imbalances, it will help to lower cholesterol and lower risks associated with heart disease.

Get a complete physical examination before beginning any new type of therapy. Many doctors will not prescribe hormone replacement therapy or suggest alternatives without a complete medical history and taking into consideration any prescription or over-the-counter drug usage. Even in suggesting estrogen creams, a physician will want to know family medical history, since risks for some diseases may be associated with genetics. Another suggestion when seeing a doctor is to make a detailed list of symptoms, how long they have been going on, and what type of therapies have been tried in the past. Without medical history a physician will most likely want to do a series of tests before diagnosis and treatment. Blood tests will help a doctor determine cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and infections in the body, among other things.

Oftentimes women who are suffering with hormone imbalances experience symptoms of depression. Being uncomfortable and in pain may cause some changes in brain chemicals that contribute to mood swings, anxiety, and panic attacks. As a woman ages, estrogen levels are decreased and eventually progesterone levels are nonexistent. Estrogen supplements may help with some of the symptoms associated with depression but there may be something else missing that only the Lord can help. Turning to the Creator, God Almighty, and meditating on His promises can bring peace to chaos in life. "But unto you that fear My name shall the Son of righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall." (Malachi 4:2) Try joining a church; participate with other Believers in worship services and fellowship. Make time everyday to talk to God, and read His word.

Hormone therapy should not be used for women who think they might be pregnant. Other illnesses that are risky for hormone replacement therapy include heart attack, stroke, or any type of cancer within the last year, blood clots, liver disease, and diabetes. Even using estrogen creams are not recommended for women who have high risks for developing any of these mentioned illnesses or conditions. Lifestyle changes should be considered as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy or estrogen supplements. Stress can deplete the body and affect hormone levels along with other damaging lifestyle habits. Eating the wrong foods, not getting enough or any exercise, and not getting enough sleep can all contribute to overall bad health. A few basic lifestyle changes could make all the difference. Making changes may seem overwhelming but healthy lifestyle changes will be a much better alternative to taking prescription drugs or having to use estrogen creams.
