Lap Band Stomach Surgery

Preferred by Hollywood stars and housewives, lap band stomach surgery is a minimally-invasive procedure to lose excess pounds. Short for laparascopic gastric bypass, the procedure involves surgically placing an expandable silicone band around the top of the upper stomach to restrict the amount of food patients can consume. Because less food is consumed, patients feel fuller sooner and the pounds gradually come off, an average of fifty to one hundred within the first couple of years. The procedure is less invasive than bariatric gastric bypass surgeries, which cut or staple the stomach and intestines to create a smaller pouch or redirect food away from the duodenum. The morbidity rate for invasive bypass operations is nearly ten times more than that of laparascopic gastric bypass surgery. Patients suffer fewer side effects and complications, shorter hospitalization, and recover more quickly.

Morbidly obese men and women who have tried conventional means of losing excess weight opt for lap band stomach surgery because of its relative safety and effectiveness. Qualified surgeons determine the size and type of device appropriate for each patient. While the procedure is similar in each case, the size and composition of the prosthetic must meet the requirements of an individual's physical makeup. Surgeons make a small incision through the navel to insert the laparascopic band. Once in place, the inflatable device is filled with a saline solution, which causes it to tighten around the upper stomach and create a smaller opening through which food can pass. After recovery and as the patient heals, surgeons can make adjustments to help achieve an optimal level of comfort and avoid regurgitation. Patients frequently require several "fills," or adjustments following surgery to ensure that the device fits comfortably and enables the right amount of food to pass through.

Actresses and actors, housewives, and high-profile attorneys not only favor lap band stomach surgery because of fewer side effects and complications, but also because the procedure is completely reversible. Women who desire to become pregnant can have the device removed before trying to conceive and replaced to help facilitate post-partum weight loss. Celebrities who achieve their desired weight can opt to reverse lap band stomach surgery while resuming a healthy low-fat maintenance diet. Unlike invasive bariatric gastric bypass procedures, which cause a permanent restructuring or rerouting of the stomach and intestines, laparascopic prosthetics can be gradually adjusted as patients become psychologically and physically more able to adjust to eating smaller portions. A morbidly obese individual who is used to consuming larger quantities of food at one setting may have trouble limiting caloric intake immediately after surgery. Regurgitation is common and a syndrome called "dumping" often plagues surgical gastric bypass patients long after the operation has been completed. But a gradual adjustment of the laparascopic band eases patients into a more stringent weight loss diet.

While bariatric gastric bypass patients tend to lose more weight faster than those who opt for lap band stomach surgery; up to two pounds a week with strict adherence to an individually-prescribed diet and exercise program is normal. Patients of both procedures report decreased food cravings which attributed to weight gain. Restrictive, post-operative diets require patients to initially consume liquids to facilitate healing, followed by soft pureed foods. Baby food, pureed fresh fruits and vegetables, creamed wheat cereal, vegetable broth, and mashed potatoes are suggested. Patients are allowed to gradually add solid foods; but to avoid fried or processed meats, or eating too much too rapidly. Because the prosthetic restricts the amount of food patients can consume, surgeons advise taking smaller portions and chewing thoroughly to avoid regurgitation and symptoms of acid reflux. "Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Philippians 4:5-6).

Although less complicated and invasive than other gastrointestinal weight-loss procedures, lap band stomach surgery does have adverse effects. Devices can slip or erode into the stomach wall, requiring emergency surgery. Ports located beneath the navel which allow surgeons to adjust devices can leak, become painful or displaced, or become infected. Patients may experience continuous nausea or vomiting, develop acid reflux disease, or experience frequent diarrhea, constipation, or abnormal stools. Other digestive complications include hernias, pain in the abdomen or at the incision, or blockages caused by undigested food. Post-operative morbidity is still a concern, with a reported 1 in 2000 cases for laparascopic gastric bypass, as opposed to 1 in 200 for more invasive bariatric gastric bypass surgeries.

The decision to have lap band stomach surgery will depend on several factors. While celebrities and socialites may opt for the procedure to maintain a sexy body, the average overweight patient is concerned about health issues and the potential life-threatening side effects of gastrointestinal surgery. The average patient has neither the money nor the inclination to run the risk of suffering chronic discomfort as a result of weight-loss surgery elected unadvisedly. Patients who meet the physical and psychological requirements for drastic invasive surgery may feel more comfortable with less drastic procedures which are reversible. In the event that the body rejects the synthetic prosthetic device, or if complications from lap band stomach surgery create undue discomfort, patients have the option to have the device removed. Laparascopic gastric band surgery is not for everyone; but the ability to reverse it is an attractive option for men and women who want to lose weight with fewer risks. Knowledgeable surgeons, nutritionists, and therapists are capable of helping potential patients make an informed decision.
