Psychological Risks Of Abortion

A higher suicide rate is one of the many psychological risks of abortion compared with women who have delivered. Studies claim that women who terminate a pregnancy are six times more likely to commit suicide over those who don't. Other psychological risks of abortion include depression, trauma, eating disorders, guilt, substance abuse, chronic relationship problems, and self-destructive behavior. Although abortion was legalized in the United States in 1973 a woman who terminates a pregnancy will most likely have severe mental problems because of what she has done. The Bible is very clear on the subject of murder. God creates life and he is a big enough God to provide a solution other than sin to those who will seek him. "That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments" (Psalm 78:7).

Being pressured and lack of emotional support can lead a mother-to-be down the wrong path. Pressure is also felt when there are financial difficulties and health problems to consider. Psychological risks of abortion may surface immediately after having the procedure or they may surface later. Trying to repress the guilt feelings causes adverse reactions in one's mental health. At first, denial takes place as feelings are repressed. When having to deal with the issue a woman may feel anger, guilt, and hopelessness, especially if her actions conflict with her beliefs.

Oftentimes a mother-to-be may feel that she has no other choice over abortion. The reasons for feeling this way are very real to most women who have this perception. One reason is because they just do not see any other option, either from lack of doing research or because someone close to them persuades them that this is the only option. The truth is that there are other options over killing an unborn child that can be beneficial not only to the birth mother but to couples who are unable to have children of their own. Adoption is a life giving option that does not include psychological risks of abortion. There are organizations and ministries that can help a mother-to-be find someone who will love her child as their own.

Studies show that immediately after the termination of an unwanted pregnancy a patient will feel relief. This is mainly because her problem that is causing distress has been eliminated. As things get back to a normal routine a patient may start thinking about what has transpired and the magnitude of killing her unborn child will start becoming a reality. When this happens the psychological risks of abortion will surface. Women who start feeling guilty may want to immediately get pregnant again so they can try and undo their mistake. They think that having another child might make up for the feeling of loss. Studies show that around 20% of patients who abort will become pregnant again within a year of the termination.

Experiencing psychological risks of abortion affects one's behavior in a negative way. Denial and repressed feelings can lead one to avoid others especially those who know about the termination. A female might think that avoiding others will make it easier to cope. She will not want the topic to come up because avoidance is easier than trying to explain or deal with the obvious. One female may want to become an advocate for abortion and be very vocal about it because if she can convince others then maybe what she did was not so bad. Some women suffer with mental problems so extensively that others will notice an obvious change in behavior. They are no longer a happy person but instead seem very sad and withdrawn. Instead of being outgoing they may become shy and quiet.

Life begins at conception, an undisputed fact. Civilized society should not permit harm to any person, no matter of size, intelligence, race, or voice. If a criminal breaks into our homes we protect our families even if our own life is put in danger. Those who murder are convicted in a court of law and are sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in jail and some are sentenced to death. Yet, in the highest court the rights of the unborn were taken away. A mother can choose to kill her unborn child yet if she kills those who are living she is convicted of murder. The unborn do not have a voice or a say in the decision. There are other options such as adoption but these options may not be convenient or strong enough to steer some from terminating the unborn. So, there is no wonder that many women suffer with psychological risks of abortion. Abortion is not just a form of contraception. Even in the case of rape or incest, immediate medical care can prevent the fertilization of an egg thus preventing conception.

Other arguments that should be considered along with the psychological risks of abortion include the detriment to a woman's body and the health of her future babies. Females do not only suffer with mental problems they can have extensive damage to their cervix, uterus, and other organs from having a surgical abortion. Because of the physical damage to a female's body during the termination of a pregnancy a child from a future pregnancy is more likely to have low birth weight and be born premature. Seek God for guidance and help to do the right thing. Look up alternative solutions on the Internet and talk to other women who have made the wrong choice and regret it.
