Cause Of Pimples

The cause of pimples relates to the overproduction of the sebaceous glands that create an oily secretion on the surface of the skin. The oil is trapped in the hair follicles by dead or shedding skin cells which breed bacteria. The results are unsightly bumps and infections on the face, neck, back, arms, chest and sometimes thigh area. Both men and women who experience problems with acne seem to be unduly sensitive to the hormone, testosterone, which naturally occurs in both sexes. This sensitivity causes the excessive production of oil onto the skin and subsequently produces many different types of pimples that can range from mild to severe.

Most people experience skin problems between the ages of 12 and 25 when hormonal changes cause the most fluctuations in the body. It is not uncommon, however, for some people to experience outbreaks in their 40's or 50's and especially for women who are pre-menopausal or menopausal. This, again, is related to hormonal changes during this season of life. The cause of pimples in most cases can be dealt with by a regimen of oral and topical treatments. A dermatologist should generally be consulted in order to receive the most targeted and effective treatment plan. "Heal me, O Lord and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise." (Jeremiah 17:14)

Since each individual presents with a slightly different underlying cause, understanding personal skin problems is very important. The different types of pimples that affect skin usually determine the treatment methods employed. Even people who have mild cases of acne can best apply the correct over the counter or home remedies if they are sufficiently aware of the specific type that needs attention. Blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and papules are pimples associated with typical acne. Blackheads appear when a pore is blocked by an overproductive oil gland. The blockage contains a combination of dead cells, sebum and bacteria that comes to the top of the skin, but cannot drain off.

A blackhead eventually hardens and has a dark color due to the skin's pigmentation reacting with the oxygen when exposed. Unlike what most people think, the darkened color of the substance in a pore is not the result of dirt or unwashed skin and is merely the reaction of this type of acne problem. Blackheads generally take a while to clear up and are sometimes difficult to remove. There is a common tendency to 'pinch' out the blackheads which can further damage skin by scarring the area. A variety of treatments have been formulated to deal with the cause of pimples that do not damage or scar skin during the process.

Whiteheads are acne bumps that are completely blocked by oils, cells and bacteria. This type of pimples develop fairly quickly and resolve much quicker than blackheads. The tendency is to quickly 'squeeze' the bump so that the infection oozes out and the unsightly blemish clears up. Again, one should be very careful in squeezing these bumps because of the possibility of scarring.

If it becomes necessary to pop an infected area, there are a few instructions to follow. 1. Be sure to wash the hands or take a shower before attempting the procedure. This will ensure that no bacteria can enter the open area and cause further problems. 2. Apply a warm, wet cloth to the affected area for several minutes in order to loosen the infection and open the affected pore. 3. Sterilize a needle with alcohol to insure against more infection. 4. Gently use the needle to open the top of the bump. Barely touch the surface so as not to create any scarring. 5. Use a warm cloth or tissue with finger pressure to push out any infection. Stop as soon as the liquid becomes clear or slightly red. 6. After the procedure, again wash the affected area with warm water. Then immediately splash very cold water on the area. This will help close up the pore very quickly. 7. Finally, apply an astringent such as witch hazel to help the drying process.

Another one of the different types of pimples that are common to acne sufferers are called pustules. Pustules are very much like whiteheads except the bump has a red circle with a white or yellow center. These are 'zits' that teenagers experience and while quite embarrassing to tame, are not usually difficult to treat successfully. Even some over the counter medications can be quite effective.

Papules are not as easy to deal with since they are only red, lumpy bumps. They should not be squeezed under any circumstances because scarring will generally be the only result. A dermatologist should be consulted when determining the cause of pimples such as these. While there are many different types of pimples, whitehead, blackheads, pustules and papules tend to be more commonly found among the almost 80% of all Americans who experience some form of acne in their lifetime.
