Religious Views On Abortion

Religious views on abortion vary among Americans who claim to be part of the 80% majority of Christians in the US. However, most born again Christians who believe that the Bible is the absolute, infallible Word of God, adhere to a doctrinal position that poses reasons against the procedure based on a Scriptural view of man. Man was created higher than animals in the hierarchy of creation and was in fact, "created in the image of God" (Genesis 1:26-27). This understanding of Biblical truth has set the stage for logical and powerful anti-abortion arguments that are based in the worth of a person whether inside or outside the womb. It is true that believers cannot point to the specific command from the Bible that states, "Thou shalt not commit abortion." The Word of God doesn't state the anti-abortion stance in so many words. Rather, the sixth commandment, "Thou shalt not kill", is widely held as the axis on which all anti-abortion arguments rotate. Reasons against abortion rest on cumulative as well as absolute biblical statements that indicate God's perspective about the importance of human life. From the Old Testament to the New, there is a cumulative body of evidence that adds Scriptural weight to reasons against abortion.

The opening scenario of the creation provides early evidence of the importance of humanity as male and female were created in the image of God. From there, passages that refer to the important and purposes of all human beings are abundantly peppered throughout the Scriptures which has added weight to religious views on abortion. In Jeremiah 1:5 the Word of the Lord states in reference to the prophet, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee...". In Psalms 139:13-16 the reference to God's knowledge and involvement in the human creation is quite apparent. "My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret and in thy book all my members were written...when as yet there was none of them" are all passages that extol the human creation of an almighty God. Another reference regarding religious views on abortion is in Luke 1 and recounts that John the Baptist jumped in his mother's womb at Mary's greeting to his mother. These references are not all inclusive of the many instances that many personal stances rest. These references do, however, offer insight into God's attitude, view, creation and purpose for all humans who are more than an evolutionary factoid on the landscape of Darwinian secularism. A Christian world view of man provides the anti-abortion argument that sums it up by the belief that man is so important that God created Him in His own image. God also has a plan for each human being before he or she is even born, He creates at conception and masterminds our development.

In fact, we are even in His mind before we are even conceived and therefore, we are human at conception. Therefore, it is murder to purposely abort a child before birth because it is taking into human hands the Divine responsibility of life or death. This logical chain of Scriptural reference gives weighty credence to reasons against abortion. There are, of course, religious views on abortion that hold to these beliefs in various levels of importance which are colored by situational arguments. None however, can properly disregard the importance that God showed for all of humanity when He sent His own Son to die for the sins of the world. The importance that God has put on man, His ultimate creation, is an example to the importance that we should put on the life of our human brothers and sisters.

Of course the religious views on abortion continue to rage regarding the question of whether or not a life begins at conception. Some people permit it between certain months during pregnancy. Others make exceptions for rape, incest or some sort of malformation during prenatal development. Based on the cumulative evidence of the body of Scripture, it is quite evident that human life is actually conceived in the mind of God before human conception occurs. This shows the absolute plan, purpose and importance of every human being at the time of conception.

On the practical level, women who have experienced abortion commonly tell of the absolute devastation they experience even years beyond an abortion. Their natural conscious cannot reconcile the snuffing out of human life and their heart breaks for the child that should have been. Even our natural inclinations cannot deny the reality of human life at the time of conception which fuels more logical reasons against abortion. How much more do we recognize the reality of life at conception when we realize that God knew all about us even before we were humanly conceived? "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are they works; and that my soul knoweth right well." (Psalm 139:14)
