Health Risks Of Abortion

Sadness, guilt, and suicidal thoughts are all health risks of abortion. Guilt feelings can lead to drug and alcohol abuse. A woman who has emotional problems dealing with an abortion oftentimes has difficulty maintaining relationships. Her emotional state can affect her entire family. Other children at home will sense that mom is not herself and they may become sad too. "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God" (Psalm 42:11). Health risks of abortion can be physical as well. Bleeding and hemorrhage are common with patients who undergo the procedure to terminate the life of an unborn child. In addition, puncture of the uterus, bowels, or other vital organs are not unheard of. This can lead to major surgery to repair the puncture and the risks of infection are greater. Sometimes infections from having an abortion can lead to septic shock or sepsis where the blood in the body becomes infected. When this happens it is very likely that death can occur.

Women have an increased risk of developing breast cancer after having an abortion. Studies have been done that reveal women younger than 18 who have never been pregnant before have a higher risk of developing breast cancer after having the procedure. Health risks of abortion are real and frightening. Women who do not learn about the risks to their physical and emotional health before terminating their pregnancy often regret it later. Sometimes women are convinced to go through with an abortion because other people in her life may be suggesting she do so. Later on the realization of what has been done may haunt her. A woman's emotional health should be a major consideration by those who are involved in the process. Doctors should sit down and talk with the patient and be upfront about possible health risks of abortion.

Local anesthesia is normally given to women who have a surgical abortion. Women may have terrible pain despite the anesthesia and in some cases the pain is so great that a woman may need to be totally put under. If local anesthesia does not work then a patient may opt to use general anesthesia. Unfortunately general anesthesia can cause complications that can add to the health risks of abortion. Some of the complications include nausea, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. Serious complications are heart attack, stroke, and death. There is a rare condition that can occur with general anesthesia in some people due to an allergic reaction. This condition causes high fever, muscle spasms, rapid heartbeat, and problems breathing. Every patient will react differently to anesthesia. A doctor should go over the side effects of medication used during abortion procedures so that a patient can make an informed decision.

Another important piece of information that a woman should learn about before going through with termination of a pregnancy is the effects it can have on later pregnancies. If there is injury to the cervix during an abortion a female may not be able to carry future pregnancies to term and the possibility of early loss is great. Scarring from the procedure could result in future eggs becoming lodged in the fallopian tubes. Health risks of abortion are greater for women who have had two or more abortions. The risk to a woman's life is much greater when she is further along in the pregnancy at the time of the termination. Children born from future pregnancies are likely to have lower birth weight. The chances of a normal delivery are lessened considerably and even after the child is born there is a greater chance that he or she may not survive.

Infection after a termination of a pregnancy can cause severe long-term effects. Health risks of abortion pertaining to infection may cause the fallopian tubes to permanently close up. Unfortunately if this happens then a woman will not be able to get pregnant in the future. If a woman happens to have a venereal disease the chances of infection are much greater. The chances of hemorrhage are much greater if a venereal disease is present. A blood transfusion because of hemorrhage can increase a woman's chance of getting hepatitis or AIDS.

Grieving for a lost child can and most likely will happen to any female that has terminated a pregnancy. Studies have shown that a woman will eventually grieve for the child. Many patients will try to forget about an abortion for several years. In modern society women are so busy working outside the home, taking care of their families, and running errands that they may find it easy to ignore the health risks of abortion especially pertaining to their psychological health. Eventually the loss will show up in other ways. A mother to be who has had her child torn from her womb may exhibit behavioral issues such as anger. Along with the anger a woman will feel depressed, anxious, and fearful. Those who do not experience anger may become numb. They do not experience joy and often feel overwhelmingly sad. This behavior can have a negative effect on relationships including with one's spouse and children. Men who have been involved in the process of making a decision to terminate a pregnancy may have psychological problems dealing with the decision as well.
