Skin Allergy Treatment

Skin allergies happen when a person comes into contact with a substance that the body recognizes as foreign triggering symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, inflammation, and hives. When the body sees a substance as a threat it triggers the immune system to rid it from the body. Skin allergy treatment works much better if the culprit is avoided. If avoiding the substance isn't realistic or a person does not know what is causing the reaction then other treatments might help. Some of these include antihistamines and topical solutions. For severe reactions a person may need to be prescribed steroid injections or creams. Some of the different types of rashes are eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, fungus infections, viral rashes, and hives.

Some of the common allergens include but are not limited to pollen, ragweed, mold, pet dander, dust mites, insect bites, latex, soy, peanuts, dairy products, milk, eggs, detergents, and cosmetics. Skin allergies are more common in people who have other types of symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of the throat, watery and itchy eyes, diarrhea, and vomiting. Those with severe symptoms should be seen by a physician for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Symptoms associated with wheezing, difficulty breathing, and coughing could be an indication that the patient is suffering with asthma. Living with allergies can be difficult at times. During difficult times prayer and faith in God can help a person cope with discomfort and pain. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Revelation 21:4)

Eczema is an itchy rash that is not contagious and is usually triggered by an allergen. One important thing to remember with eczema is that there is no known cause but the conditions seems to run in families. Eczema can be triggered by many substances and stress can cause the illness to flare and worsen. Other things that can aggravate symptoms are changes in weather and a person getting too hot. Skin allergy treatment for eczema often includes topical steroid creams or ointments. Taking a lukewarm instead of a hot bath will minimize symptoms and applying a moisturizer immediately afterwards will help soothe the rash and help with the itching. Antihistamines can keep the flares from becoming worse and control some of the discomfort, swelling, and itching.

Psoriasis is a skin disease that is triggered by an immune system response. Skin cells reproduce so rapidly they that do not have time to shed so they tend to accumulate on the surface of the skin. The condition is usually inflamed and scaly looking. The disease causes itching and burning of the skin and often occurs on the knees, palms, elbows, back, and feet. Some people that have skin allergies associated with psoriasis may develop psoriatic arthritis leading to joint inflammation and pain. The disorder is often triggered by stress, weather changes, and infection. Some medications can cause a flare and make the rash worse. A physician will normally make a diagnosis by examining the skin. Steroid ointments, medication, and prescribed sunlight seem to help the condition.

Contact dermatitis can be caused by many different types of substances. Coming in contact with poisonous plants such as poison ivy or poison oak can cause skin allergies. Other contact agents may include perfumes, dyes, harsh detergents, and cosmetics. Some fabric softeners contain ingredients that can trigger a reaction. When doing laundry, use a laundry detergent and a fabric softener that are free of dyes and perfumes and avoid using chlorine bleach. Choose cosmetics that do not contain alcohol, mineral oil, lanolin, and perfumes. Contact dermatitis can also be caused from metals found in jewelry such as gold, silver, and nickel. The skin allergy treatment for contact dermatitis will depend upon the severity of the rash. Determining what is causing the reaction is very important because continued exposure will make it difficult to heal. For a person who has no clue to what is causing his or her rash the best thing to do is start eliminating possible substances. Meanwhile mild steroid cream and oral antihistamines may provide some relief.

Fungal infections are very common and there are several different types. Athlete's foot is one of the more common types of fungus and is contagious. Some common places where a person could get exposed to the fungus are in public showers or swimming pools. Other types of fungus include ringworm and yeast infections. A doctor can usually diagnose ringworm by the way that it looks on the skin and under a microscope. Yeast infections are common and can appear anywhere on the body. Infants can have a form of yeast in their mouths, commonly known as thrush, or can have a diaper rash, caused from an overgrowth of yeast as well. Skin allergy treatment for fungus infections will often include oral medication, and topical solutions.

Viral rashes are caused by a viral infection and can be very painful. One type of viral rash is called shingles. Shingles usually causes a rash on one side of the body in a small area by the herpes zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox. Since the virus affects the nerve roots there is usually a lot of discomfort and pain associated with it. Shingles is not a contagious condition but the pain can last for a very long time. The rash usually lasts at least 2 weeks and in some cases up to 4 weeks turning into blisters before it heals. The treatment for shingles is antiviral drugs and people over the age of 60 can choose to take a vaccine that will help eliminate outbreaks.
