Treatments For Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel treatment described by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders involves resting the affected hand and wrist for at least two weeks, avoiding activities that may worsen symptoms, and immobilizing the wrist in a splint to avoid further damage from twisting or bending. Like other inflammatory problems, aspirin or ibuprofen are recommended for pain, and ice packs are good treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome. Once the symptoms have abated, stretching and strengthening exercises are recommended. This problem has been around as long as humans have overused their muscles, so it certainly isn't anything new. Symptoms usually start with pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm, an indication that carpal tunnel treatment should begin. Then tingling in the fingers may occur, and weakness that makes gripping and other manual tasks difficult if not impossible. The stricture of the nerve is sometimes simply a matter of physiology--in some people the tunnel is simply too small. However, it does seem to be more common in people who do repetitive tasks with their hands.

This area in the wrist is formed by carpal bones arranged in a semicircle with the fourth side open forming the tunnel through which the nerve travels. Compression of a key nerve in the wrist is what causes carpal tunnel syndrome. This term has been used for this condition since the 1930s. The only proven permanent carpal tunnel treatment, according to physicians involved with this disability, is surgery. In 1947, the first surgery was tried to remedy the problem. The surgery released the nerve from its stricture in the wrist. This procedure wasn't changed until 1990, when the endoscopic procedure was introduced. Some herbal treatments for carpal tunnel being offered today are probably not too different from those used by our ancient ancestors with their limited medical knowledge. The medical community, by and large, rejects herbal remedies like topical creams and Vitamin B-6.

A nerve test is done to confirm the diagnosis and carpal tunnel treatment begins soon after the diagnosis is confirmed. Then a decision must be made about how to release the pressure on the nerve. The goal of treatments is to leave the patient pain free and with full use of the affected hand. Research is currently being done at the National Institutes of Health to evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions as preventive treatment among construction workers. Scientists are also studying alternative treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome, such as acupuncture. Ultimately, God is the protector of our health, and sometimes He allows difficulties to come our way. But He never excuses us from looking toward our spiritual health. Proverbs 3:7,8 says, "Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones." When we seek physical health, our first responsibility is to examine our spiritual health.
