Anorexia nervosa is a serious disorder that affects a number of women and young girls. It's actually classified as a psychiatric disorder, and is almost always linked to low self-image or low body-image. These young women don't fit into a single category, but they all have an intense desire to be thin. This desire controls their mind to the point that they simply won't eat in order to keep the pounds off. Little or no food consumption and excessive exercising to burn any consumed calories are seen in girls with anorexia.
Young women with this problem need to be monitored by their family and given additional assistance to fight the mental battle raging within them. It's difficult to calculate the number who die because of the disease. Often, anorexia nervosa causes other medical problems that lead to death, and it is never reported or known that the girl was a victim . Aside from not knowing the number of deaths caused by anorexia nervosa, data shows that it affects thousand of girls and young women each year, and it is an increasing problem across much of the western world, especially in America.
This disorder can stem from other psychological disorders such as severe depression schizophrenia, social phobia or obsessive-compulsive disorder. These other disorders have been seen in studies of girls with anorexia. When a person suffers from one of these psychological disorders, and they feel they have little or no control over their life, these girls look for areas they can have complete power and control over. What goes into their bodies is one thing these girls find that can be controlled without outside influences changing it. Unfortunately, this is why so many, resist any help. If they accept help, then once again they're losing control of a part of their life. God is in control of everyone's life. Every person that believes in Him should find comfort in knowing that He takes care of His children as long as His rules are obeyed.
Although psychological disorders contribute to the prevalence of this disorder, society is also to blame. Many girls with anorexia talk about the pressure they feel from today's culture to be thin. Magazines, movies and television feature beautiful, thin models. These females constantly talk about dieting, eating less, and exercising. A negative emphasis has been placed on eating altogether. Girls with anorexia don't see eating as a way to stay healthy; these young women see it as a way to get fat. Until society changes its attitude about food, anorexia nervosa will continue to be a mental battle within many young women.
