Laser Eye Treatment

With laser eye treatment, those who's visions are dependent upon the use of glasses, can greatly improve their sight. In some cases, patients that receive lasik eye treatment have regained a perfect 20/20 vision, allowing them to see the world through perfect sight and allowing them to loose the necessity of fumbling with glasses and contact lenses. Evolving and improving as they become more and more popular, these high-tech surgical procedures are dramatically changing the way many people not only see, but now live. Anyone considering this simple surgery should first, however, obtain in-depth information about what this process actually is, who are good candidates for the procedure, and what can be expected before and after. This high tech process is not for everyone and research is highly advised.

The word LASIK is an acronym which means Laser Assisted Situ Karatomileusis. Using an intense laser beam as a knife, doctors can permanently alter the shape of the cornea. Using one type of laser to cut the clear membrane covering the front of the eye-ball, and then another type of intense beam to open a flap in the cornea, optical experts can gain access into the areas of the eye that reflects light. Once the flaps are opened, the middle section of the cornea, or the stroma, is revealed, and a monochromatic beam is used to evaporate a portion of the stroma, changing the shape. This reshaping of the cornea allows for sharper focus or light refractive improvement. Most imperfections in sight are caused by an imperfect shape of the cornea. The cornea is the object that focuses light and helps create an image on the retina, and when it is misshapen, light patterns cause distortions on the image being sent to the retina. Once the stroma is reshaped, light refraction greatly improves, giving the patient of a laser eye treatment better sight. There are different lasers and techniques used to obtain the same objective, and though procedures may vary, this is the main idea of how lasik eye treatment is accomplished.

Refractive errors are what cause nearsightedness, farsightedness, and general focus problems. These errors are known as hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism. Anyone suffering from these most common optical conditions, or a combination of, could be a candidate for a lasik eye treatment procedure. But, there are those who should not consider this advance treatment for optical refraction problems. Young people under the age of eighteen can still grow, leading to further changes in the shape of the cornea. There are also those who have a condition called refractive instability. Refractive instability is a condition that causes the eye's ability to focus light to change often, making this diagnosis impractical for the surgery. Also, those who are pregnant, who have fluctuating hormones, diabetes, or other diseases that prevent healing should not consider this process.

A laser eye treatment is usually performed in the doctor's office and can take less than thirty minutes. Medicine that will cause numbing will be placed into the eyeball and then the areas surrounding it will be thoroughly cleaned. A device that keeps the lid open will be placed on the eye. The doctor will then place a ring on the eye and pressure will then create a suction, pulling the cornea forward. At this point, the doctor will begin to use various laser beams to open the cornea and begin the process of reshaping it. After the surgery, there will be a protective covering that should be used to keep patients from rubbing the area, which may be itching and burning. Also, excessive tearing or watering can be an after effect. Doctors should provide patients with post-op instructions.

There are many different methods and lasers used in these procedures and many doctors who perform these surgeries. Patients should speak with their current optometrists for recommendations or referrals. Those considering lasik eye treatment procedures should begin their search by speaking with professionals in the field, or with others who have obtained the same surgery, staying away from advertising claims that sound too good to be true. Also, once a doctor is selected, it is a good idea to also ask for additional referrals and speak to several patients about the process and the over-all satisfaction with the experience. The Bible teaches us that getting advice and counsel is always a good choice to make. "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors, there is safety." (Proverbs 11:14)

Most laser eye treatment surgeries are not covered by insurance and can be quite costly. However, cost should not be the only factor considered when researching the various doctors and methods used. There are risks involved with lasik eye treatment, and patients will need to firmly understand all of the risks involved before going forward with the treatment. The Internet can be a valuable source of information and there are articles and informative web sites sponsored by objective parties that can offer details about the risks and expectations of these surgeries. Equipped with truthful information and realistic expectations, those considering lasik surgeries should be ready to go forward with their plans.
