Laser Eye Surgeon

Laser eye surgery is a corrective operation on one or both eyes that utilizes a laser-assisted procedure called LASIK. Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis or LASIK operations are performed by a laser eye surgeon who is expert in reshaping the cornea in order to correct eyesight problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Many patients who undergo this type of operation do so in hopes of not only achieving better vision, but also of being able to go without glasses. Reshaping the cornea with a special laser can provide improved eyesight within the same day of surgery with little side effects or pain. The demand for corrective eye surgeries through this procedure has given rise to a respected specialty among vision surgeons who provide this popular service.

Many refractive surgeries have proved to be highly successful and continue to add to the proof that LASIK really works for many patients. However, there are never any guarantees in any medical procedure and there are always plenty of risks. Before deciding on this procedure, a patient needs to consider all the factors involved in order to make an informed decision. Laser eye surgery is a very new medical option for corrective procedures and has only been around since 1998. There have not been enough studies completed or length of time that the procedure has been in use to provide clear evidence of the long term effects on patients who undergo this procedure. It is known at this point, however, that the effectiveness of surgeries that deal with farsightedness may lessen in effect with age.

A refractive operation may not produce the desired effect, as well, for those who have more extensive cornea problems that cause them to wear glasses. A laser eye surgeon may advise that even after a successful operation, the patient may still need to wear contact lenses or glasses in order to see well. This may dampen the motivation for some prospective patients for this procedure because for many people, losing the glasses is a big plus that laser eye surgery offers to some. It is a statistical fact that many patients will not achieve 20/20 vision even after the procedure. Many who need reading glasses before an operation will still need them after the procedure. Other risks or problems associated with laser eye surgery also include developing dry eye syndrome, worsening problems or in some cases, vision loss.

While many do not present with the more serious side effects of the operation, a qualified laser eye surgeon is obligated to explain all risks to any patient who is considering the LASIK procedure. After a refractive operation some patients develop the symptoms of dryness in which the eye is not able to provide enough moisture to keep it from blurring and experiencing constant irritation. Those who develop this condition will generally be prescribed a lifetime regimen of drops and moisture therapy to control dryness and maintain vision health. Nighttime vision can also be affected by laser eye surgery and symptoms such as glaring, blurred or double vision can occur in the hours from dusk till dawn. Before having this procedure, it is always wise to thoroughly discuss it with a surgeon no matter what other patients have reported.

Each patient is unique and the operation will have its own unique successes or failures depending on the quality of the procedure, seriousness of a condition and subsequent healing process. Choosing the right surgeon is one of the most important considerations in insuring the best operation possible. An eye surgeon that has successfully performed many operations will obviously be more qualified than one who is just getting started. Yes, every doctor needs experience, but most patients do not want to be the one that is practiced on! "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid." (Psalm 27:1a)

Ask lots of questions of any laser eye surgeon before consenting to a procedure. The right equipment is also necessary for the best LASIK procedures since there are different types that are used. Make sure that an eye doctor uses FDA approved laser equipment and has used it multiple times. The cost can vary as well and many patients are tempted to bite the bait on many advertisements that offer special rates and discounts. The typical, single operation can cost up to $2,000 or more depending on procedures and laser eye surgeons. Statistics show that less than 4% of patients receive surgery for less than $500. As with any sort of medical service, cost is not the only consideration and may well be an indicator of quality. There is a vast difference in some procedures, equipment and professional health care regarding this operation so it is best to be well informed before making a decision.
