Extended Wear Contact Lenses

Before purchasing extended wear contact lenses, a person is best advised to first investigate the matter including whether glasses might not be a better choice for them instead. "And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it." (Daniel 8:26-27). Because in fact, both contact lenses and glasses have their respective advantages and disadvantages. But, generally speaking, contacts are an option for the majority of those whose vision requires correction. And where contacts are concerned, there are different advantages specifically attached to the various types of contacts. But contacts, with the exception of the ones used for cosmetic purposes, provide the same basic benefits that glasses do. However, a significant number of people have a better vision experience when they use contacts. The reason for this is that contacts are able to correct a person's vision in a less artificial way.

First, one needs to become acquainted with the different types of contacts in general. This is in order to be able to judge whether or not extended wear contact lenses are actually the type a particular person is suited for. For instance, there are daily-wear soft lenses, which may also be disposable. Soft contacts are made of flexible plastic that is permeable to air and more comfortable than hard ones. Like their name, daily wear soft contacts must be cleaned on a daily basis but only with a particular solution recommended for that purpose. As stated, they also come as disposables that are thrown away at the end of one day. So therefore, the need to purchase and use a cleaning solution will never be neccesary in this case. Second, there are planned replacement soft contacts which are replaced according to a schedule at planned intervals.

Next, there are RGP lenses that are more permeable to oxygen because, unlike soft contacts, they contain silicone. These contacts last longer and result in a superior vision experience for the wearer. By the way, RGP's are also known as Rigid Gas Permeable contacts. In addition, there are cosmetic lenses that can change not only a person's eye color, but the appearance and texture of their eyes as well. And finally, there are extended wear contact lenses: these can be worn continuously not only throughout the night, but also for as long as a week. Incidentally, these contacts are also known as continuous wear lenses. First of all, they are constructed of extremely air permeable hydrophilic polymeric materials. And too, this type requires neither disinfection nor cleaning during their extended period of wear. As a rule, the extended period can range from a week to a month. To conclude this review, one can also choose soft extended wear contact lenses that last for as long as a week and do require a small amount of cleansing.

One of the main advantages of extended wear contact lenses is the wearer having the convenience of being free of glasses on a full time basis. To begin with, those who participate in sports, for example, greatly appreciate the freedom this type allows. In addition to practical advantages, of course there is the obvious cosmetic advantage of not having to wear eyeglasses. Generally speaking, people are happy about, for example, not needing to hunt for either glasses or contacts on the way to the restroom in the middle of the night. And these, in addition to being more permeable than regular soft ones, are advantageous for people who have relatively dry eyes because they don't dry up as much. Further, this type has a specially treated biocompatible surface. And this surface is designed to diminish the buildup of bacteria.

Plus, a build up of protein is also avoided with this kind of surface. Therefore, the wearer of extended wear contact lenses avoids eye infections caused by either bacteria or protein buildup much more easily. Please note that it is extremely important for a qualified professional such as a medical doctor or dispensing optician to be involved with the contacts' fitting. Equally important are regular check ups in order to maintain good eye health. However, one should not conclude from this that those who use this type are probably scott-free from the danger of eye infection. In fact, due to the long term nature of these contacts if, for example, they are poorly cleaned or poorly fitted then complications including eye infections do indeed occur. Therefore, these super convenient lenses are considered by some experts to actually be the riskiest type a person can wear. Again, careful research and the involvement of a qualified vision professional are highly recommended.

In summary, even if one has made a previous, unsuccessful attempt to obtain extended wear contact lenses, it is still always worth investigating at intervals because the relevant technology is constantly advancing. Consider, for example, the case of a prospective mother contemplating the need to rise often in the middle of the night to tend the newborn: the benefit of wearing contacts continuously throughout the night is an obvious one. However,it is worth mentioning that, even in times of economic crisis, an individual should always refrain from purchasing these or any other type of contacts that have a cheap price. More often than not these less expensive products lack even the proper instructions for use and care. But those products that are obtainable at a discount price are well worth considering. So whether for cosmetic, practical, or medically related reasons extended wear contact lenses are a wonderful option for many people.
