Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration treatment can be effective in slowing down the progress of sight loss. This disease is usually age-related and gradually destroys your central vision. It affects millions of people over the age of 40 today. There are even forms of the disease that affect children and teenagers. Eye treatments for this disease include laser surgery, photodynamic therapy and a protein called Macugen. Although these procedures can't restore lost vision and there is no cure, they can prevent further damage and at the very least, slow down the process of sight loss. Thus, they give hope to the millions affected.

The first form of treatment is laser surgery. Today, this has been largely abandoned. This is now reserved for those with abnormal blood vessels far from the center of the eye's macula. Unfortunately, due to the heat of the laser, some healthy tissue can be damaged during these eye treatments. Also, the re-growth of abnormal blood vessels typically resumes within five years. Other surgical procedures can remove or destroy the abnormal blood vessels before a certain stage of the disease.

Another form is photodynamic therapy. The patient is injected with Visudyne, a light-sensitive drug. Once the Visudyne is in the patient's system, a low-intensity laser is shone into their eye, leading to the closure of the blood vessel and prevention of the re-growth of abnormal blood vessels. Unfortunately, though, with this treatment, additional treatments may be required because abnormal blood vessels could re-grow and bleed.

The last macular degeneration treatment is Macugen, which is injected into the patient's eye. Macugen is a drug developed to block vascular endothelial growth factor. The drug must be injected consistently because blocking vascular endothelial growth factor is constantly replenishing itself. This is the newest form of macular degeneration treatment and requires that the patient be in a specific stage of the disease. Patients should consult their doctor about pursuing such eye treatments.

Blindness is the eventuality of macular degeneration, and there is no cure. Seeking eye treatments and the advice of your doctor can help you in preventing the progress of this disease. It is important that you also talk to people you know about what you are going through. It is necessary to have their support and prayers in this difficult time. You need the company and love of those around you. "We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company." (Psalm 55:14)
